The Great Amitābha Sūtra says: 'The light of Amitābha Buddha is supremely great, being the king of the light of all buddhas. Therefore, he is called Buddha of Immeasurable Light, Buddha of Boundless Light, Buddha of Unhindered Light, Buddha of Incomparable Light, Buddha of the King of Blazing Light, Buddha of Pure Light, Buddha of Joyful Light, Buddha of Wisdom Light, Buddha of Unceasing Light, Buddha of Inconceivable Light, Buddha of Ineffable Light, and Buddha of Light Surpassing the Sun and Moon. His light shines upon the dark places in countless worlds, making them all constantly brightly illuminated. When devas, humans, beasts, and creeping, flying, and wriggling creatures see this light, none are not gladdened and do not give rise to a mind of compassion, and all attain liberation. Therefore, the buddhas, bodhisattvas, pratyekabuddhas, and śrāvakas of the ten directions all praise him, and for this reason he is named "Buddha of Light Surpassing the Sun and Moon".' This is because the sun can shine by day, and the moon can shine by night, so their virtues are not complete. The Buddha's light constantly shines day and night, without lack or defect; therefore, it is called 'light surpassing the sun and moon'. Nowadays, there is a class of foolish people who falsely instruct others to inhale and gather light with their mouths when the sun and moon first rise, swallowing it into their bellies, wishing it to become a treasure to serve as a secret method of cultivation, calling this 'light surpassing the sun and moon'—how immense is their error! It is like foolish monkeys joining arms to climb trees, hanging down a cliff to catch the moon in the water: toiling their minds and expending effort, it comes to nothing in the end. If one is a wise person of penetrating insight, one must swiftly abandon this and seek the true Dharma early, avoid falling into the ford of delusion, and single-mindedly recite the name of Amitābha to investigate and clarify the mind-ground. Do you not see what the patriarch said: 'What enters through the gate is not the family treasure'? One's own spiritual light illuminates heaven and dazzles earth, and in everyone's portion it is originally fully accomplished. This single point of the spiritual source has no inside and no outside; it is manifest in every single circumstance and bright in every single thing. If one can awaken to this, that is the Tathāgata: a ray of light surpassing the sun and moon.
