10.40

昔趙州和尚見僧，問曰：「汝曾到此不？」僧云：「曾到。」州云：「喫茶去。」又問僧云：「曾到此不？」僧云：「不曾到。」州云：「喫茶去。」院主問：「曾到，且從；不曾到，如何也喫茶去？」州乃喚院主，主應諾，州云：「喫茶去。」叢林因此有趙州茶話公案。今愚人不明祖師大意，妄自造作，將口內津唾灌漱三十六次嚥之，謂之喫趙州茶。或有臨終妄指教人，用硃砂末茶點一盞喫了，便能死去，是會趙州機關。更可怜憫者，有等魔子以小便作趙州茶。何愚惑哉？非妖怪而何耶？真正修心者，但依本分念佛，期生淨邦。切不可妄將祖師公案杜撰穿鑿，是謗大般若之罪人也。不見道乍可粉身千萬劫，莫將佛法亂傳揚。

Formerly, Venerable Zhaozhou saw a monk and asked: 'Have you been here before, or not?' The monk said: 'I have been here.' Zhaozhou said: 'Go drink tea.' He again asked another monk: 'Have you been here before, or not?' The monk said: 'I have not been here.' Zhaozhou said: 'Go drink tea.' The monastery director asked: 'He who has been here, that is fine; but he who has not been here, why [did you tell] him to go drink tea as well?' Zhaozhou then called the monastery director, and the director answered. Zhaozhou said: 'Go drink tea.' The monastic groves therefore have the gongan of Zhaozhou's tea talk. Nowadays, foolish people do not understand the patriarch's great intention and recklessly fabricate practices, gargling and swallowing their mouth's saliva thirty-six times, calling it 'drinking Zhaozhou's tea.' Or when approaching death, some falsely point and teach people to drink a bowl whisked with cinnabar powder and tea, claiming that they can then pass away, and that this is understanding Zhaozhou's mechanism. Even more pitiful, there are some demon-followers who take urine as Zhaozhou's tea. How foolish and deluded! If not monsters, what are they? True cultivators of the mind should merely follow their proper duty in buddhānusmṛti, hoping to be born in the pure realm. Absolutely do not recklessly fabricate and force interpretations on the patriarchs' gongan; to do so makes one a transgressor who slanders great prajñā. Do you not see it said: 'Rather pulverize the body for thousands of myriads of kalpas, than propagate the Buddha's Dharma in confusion'?
