I humbly consider that the very first thought originally comes from the Pure Land. Sunken and drifting through many lifetimes, one has yet to escape the Sahā world. Fortunately encountering the Lotus Society and meeting the authentic tradition, looking up and relying on the remaining shelter of the Three Jewels, and receiving the transforming nurture of the Guide, I humbly observe that under the teachings, many cultivate on mistaken paths. Alas! Those with faithful minds all become demonic minions, causing the virtuous to suffer heterodox falls; the correct cause is wiped out, and the life of wisdom can hardly survive. Instead, they incur the grave sin of slandering the Dharma—how could there be any merit from recitation and retention? Beholding such a state, I sigh deeply; pained to the core of body and mind, I cannot bear it. It is for this reason that I have gathered the essential tenets of the Great Canon to verify our fundamental school, swept away the disputes of the hundred schools to illuminate the great path, all relying on the scriptures to analyze principles, revealing the correct and crushing the heterodox, shining impartially—hence it is named the Precious Mirror. May it cause later students to reflect upon their own minds and eyes, naturally distinguishing the fair from the foul, and guide those who have lost their way to reach their homeland and avoid wandering. As this collection is completed, my humble intent should be stated: bowing a hundred times to the ancestral hall, I reiterate a great vow, declaring to the buddhas and great patriarchs of the ten directions, hoping they will grant their compassionate light to verify and witness my prayer. I, Pudu, respectfully and spontaneously generate the mind and make the vow: following the number of characters in the chapters of the compiled Lotus School Precious Mirror, for each character I make three prostrations, and with each prostration recite the Heart-mantra of the Śūraṅgama-dhāraṇī once and invoke the venerable name of Namo Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva three times. Looking up to your compassionate mind for pity and empathy, granting the Dharma power of hidden assistance, may demons and heterodoxies take refuge, and may the true vehicle be disseminated: opening eyes for the blind, acting as a fine physician for the sick and suffering, serving as a lamp and torch amid dark paths of obscurity, serving as a boat and raft within the vast waves of the sea of suffering, making a great bridge at perilous places, showing the correct path amidst lost roads. Universally for all superior virtuous persons of the lotus societies in the ten directions, may we together repent and cleanse body and mind, and each vow to eliminate karmic obstacles. As for the fault of preaching the non-Dharma as Dharma and the error of preaching the Dharma as non-Dharma, a single spark of wisdom can extinguish ten thousand years of folly, and a single lamp can shatter a thousand years of darkness. Deluded thoughts dissipate and sky-flowers vanish; correct faith arises and pure conduct becomes manifest. Faithfully bowing to Amitābha, I universally dedicate this merit: together with the great assembly, from this day forward generating bodhi, throughout all kalpas of the future ever practicing the bodhisattva path, leaving behind non-brahmacarya, staying far from teachers of wrong views. We vow that when this retribution body is exhausted, we will be born together in the land of Sukhāvatī. Ever cultivating the six recollections and the six pāramitās, broadly exercising the four [immeasurable] minds and the four great vows, making forty-eight vows like Amitābha, attaining buddhānusmṛti-samādhi like Mahāsthāmaprāpta, practicing the conduct and vows of Samantabhadra, equaling the compassion of Avalokiteśvara, learning great wisdom like Mañjuśrī, next ascending to the position of succession like Maitreya, suddenly entering the dharmadhātu and fully realizing the supreme vehicle. May our emanated bodies reach everywhere throughout the ten directions, with great compassion universally saving all, erecting the Dharma banner, establishing the fundamental tenets, radiating the sun of wisdom, and dispelling ignorant darkness, so that all demons and heterodoxies completely surrender and submit, and all across the earth and under heaven turn toward transformation. With unobstructed eloquence, broadly benefiting beings numerous as dust and sand; with boundless majestic virtue, rescuing sentient beings; may parents, teachers, and elders all ascend the gate of liberation, and may enemies and kin of accumulated kalpas all emerge from the ocean of sinking and drowning. I humbly hope that those who behold this collection will give rise to the mind of protecting the Dharma, sweep away the deluded passions of successive kalpas, break through the thousandfold net of doubt, suddenly open their correct eye, and clearly awaken to their fundamental mind: reaching the bodhimanda of the Pure Land without moving a foot, and having the great Sage of the West appear as if right before their eyes. The ten thousand dharmas will be clearly understood—the marvelous lies right here. I only hope that devas and dragons will rejoice, hearing the correct Dharma and protecting it; that ordinary beings and sages will take refuge, sweeping away heterodox winds and eradicating their traces. Propagating the ancestral path, broadly broadcasting the style of our school, blending the great chiliocosm into the land of pure peace, causing the four seas to jointly delight in non-action transformation; may right views and wrong views all enter into the unborn, and may imperial benevolence and the Buddha's benevolence be repaid equally at once. When the realm of space is exhausted, when the realms of sentient beings are exhausted, when the karmas of sentient beings are exhausted, and when the afflictions of sentient beings are exhausted, only then will my vow be exhausted. Yet because the realm of space up to the afflictions of the realms of sentient beings can never be exhausted, this vow king of mine shall have no end. Thought after thought succeeding without interruption, in body, speech, and mind karma without weariness. As Bodhisattva Samantabhadra made vows, as all the great patriarchs made vows, so do I now make vows, so do I universally make vows on behalf of the great assembly of the lotus society, and so do I make vows on behalf of all sentient and insentient beings to the end of the future. Thus, thus, none are not thus. May we, together with such beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, all enter the ocean of the Tathāgata's vows.
