The 'Precious Mirror' is a mirror that illuminates the mind. The essence of a mirror is clarity; thus it dispels all dimness and distinguishes all beauty and ugliness. Suspended upon the stand, there is nothing it does not reflect. Great Master Youtan, named Pudu, of the Patriarchal Hall of Donglin, possesses correct view and knowledge. Constantly lamenting that erroneous interpretations of the Lotus School departed from the truth, he synthesized the books of Confucianism and Buddhism and composed the *Precious Mirror* in ten fascicles, elucidating the orthodox samādhi of buddhānusmṛti. Every single word and every single sentence has been verified against the Buddhas, patriarchs, dragons, and devas; all sweep away the teachings of Māra and truly constitute a great guiding thread for the Dharma gate. His intention is sincere and impartial, diligent and painstaking; his courageous resolve to support the school is forged together with the intention of the eighteen worthies who established the teaching. Those who hear it and those who see it will all hasten along the open thoroughfare; whether conforming or opposing, they will equally reach Sukhāvatī. He further composed a verse, saying:
For a thousand years the Lotus School magnifies the correct arguments;
Its brightness surpasses a precious mirror hanging in the blue sky.
Now having set it onto printing blocks to be struck off,
Even ten thousand ounces of yellow gold it would rightfully deserve.
