10.65

法不孤起，仗境方生。劒離匣為不平，藥出瓶因救病。優曇大師傷蓮宗之凋瘵，搜索大藏、討究百家，發明念佛三昧，捃摭成書，目之曰寶鑑。事分十門，理符一致，排斥邪說、訂審舛訛，咸有準憑，非私臆論。洗頑嚚於意地、破偏執於心源，坐進覺城、光敭祖道，使正教大明於一統，釋疑情桎梏於畛畦，導黎庶於重昏、報皇恩於萬世，𮚏莫及矣！貽諸後云。

Dharmas do not arise in isolation; they are born only in reliance on conditions. The sword leaves its sheath on account of injustice; the medicine comes out of the bottle to cure sickness. Great Master Youtan grieved over the decline of the Lotus School; he searched through the great canon, investigated the hundred schools, elucidated the buddhānusmṛti-samādhi, and gathered them into a book entitled the *Precious Mirror*. Its contents are divided into ten sections, its principles conform in unity; it rejects heterodox theories and scrutinizes errors, all based on authoritative proof and not personal conjectures. It washes the stubbornness from the field of intention, shatters one-sided clinging at the mind-source, allows one to enter the City of Awakening seated, and glorifies the way of the patriarchs, causing the correct teaching to shine brightly across the unified realm, releasing the shackles of doubts at the borders, guiding the multitude of common people out of dense darkness, and repaying the imperial favor for myriad generations—nothing can surpass this! Left for posterity.
