The single Amitābha Buddha / Is originally fully complete in everyone. / Merely due to delusion, anger, and craving, / One emptily rises and sinks in birth and death. / Lingering along through karma in the ocean of suffering, / For ten thousand kalpas one endures the bewildering ford. / If one does not arouse a thought of turning back, / One turns and enters ever deeper. / I urge you to be vigorous: / In buddhānusmṛti you should transcend! / In the west there is a world, / Named the Land of Sukhāvatī, / With the wonderful lotus thrones of nine grades, / And the true reality of the three emptinesses. / Precious halls and precious storied pavilions, / With gold spread across the ground; / Radiant light ever shines, / Without the fear of the three evil paths. / I show this to you sentient beings, / So you may rectify your mental direction: / Cast aside greed, anger, and delusion; / All together take hold of wisdom; / Hang cold eyes between your brows, / And see through the affairs of the red dust. / Piling up gold and jade like a mountain / Cannot buy three inches of breath. / Family and dear kin / Are briefly like a puppet play. / While alive, a gathering of joy; / After death, who can take one's place? / In the end there is a time when the performance disperses— / What romantic charm could compare to that? / Quietly ponder it in detail: / The whole spectacle is without flavor. / Why not rest your mind early, / Practice buddhānusmṛti, and cultivate samādhi? / Bring forth this ancient Amitābha, / From beginning to end do not let it slip back. / Just like a person suffering from an eye ailment / Who approaches the King of Physicians for treatment, / Far and near, high and low, / Relying upon a walking stick as support: / Hold firmly onto it with a trusting hand, / With a single thought free from duality; / Let every step be firmly planted, / With each tap knowing where it falls. / If only subject and object pose no hindrance, / In the end the time will arrive / When you personally call upon the King of Physicians, / And he reveals the true wonderful elixir. / Throwing wide open the proper eye, / Piercing through the empty, illusory cataract, / Radiant light illuminates the ten directions, / Vastly penetrating through the three times. / Coming and going, attaining freedom, / One with the body, without bonds or fetters, / Happy and at ease in roaming free, / Singing loudly, 'Li-luo-li!' / If you can cultivate according to this, / There is neither difficulty nor ease in the supreme Way. / When such a person's life comes to an end, / There will surely be a meeting at the lotus pond. / You need only resolve on a willing heart; / This mountain monk has no intent to deceive. / Each of you, quickly turn your light inward early, / Direct your thoughts to go to the West; / In the nine grades awaken to true emptiness, / In a single thought transcend to the real ground. / Sentient beings and Buddhas are originally identical in essence; / In complete realization there is no difference.
