The Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka-sūtra states: "In an ancient kalpa, there was a wheel-turning king named Araṇemin, whose minister Samudrareṇu served as his spiritual friend. Together, they generated bodhicitta in the presence of Ratnagarbha Buddha. Araṇemin made this vow: 'I shall cultivate the Mahāyāna and obtain a pure land; I shall never wish to attain anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi in a defiled land where the world's sentient beings suffer tribulations. If I do not attain such a buddha-land, I shall not attain correct awakening.' Now that his fruit is fulfilled, he is named Amitābha, and thus he manifests the Pure Land. The minister Samudrareṇu vowed to mature sentient beings in a defiled land; now his fruit is also fulfilled, and he is named Śākymuni, who attained the bodhi of buddhahood within this turbid, evil world."
