Lay bodhisattvas serve the Buddha and uphold the precepts, managing household responsibilities daily; if they are unable to cultivate with single-minded devotion, they must rise early, burn incense, pay reverence to the Three Jewels, and practice buddhānusmṛti as circumstances allow; every day at dusk they should likewise worship and recite in this manner, taking it as a regular daily practice. If due to business they miss the time, on the following day they should personally repent and explain before the Buddha. This Dharma gate importantly does not interfere with one's fundamental occupation: scholars are not hindered from studying, farmers are not hindered from plowing, artisans are not hindered from crafting, and merchants are not hindered from trading. Besides the morning attendance and evening worship, if one can also seize moments throughout the twelve two-hour periods of the day to uphold the Buddha's name for one hundred or one thousand recitations, taking sincere devotion as practice, one can look forward to rebirth in the Pure Land. Dedicate [merit] saying: 'May the merit of your disciple [Name]'s worship and recitation grant that at the end of life I may be born directly by the lotus pond of the Pure Land, personally see Amitābha, and meet good companions amid the rows of jeweled trees. I dedicate this universally so that parents, teachers, and sentient beings of the dharmadhātu may together fulfill this vow.' This can truly be called: 'Accumulating specks of dust forms a giant mountain; / Dropping water gradually becomes a river.'
