The Vimalakīrti-sūtra says: "A bodhisattva of the Sarvagandhasugandhā world asked: 'Accomplishing how many dharmas does a bodhisattva practice in this world without blemish and take birth in the Pure Land?' Vimalakīrti said: 'A bodhisattva accomplishes eight dharmas to practice in this world without blemish and take birth in the Pure Land. What are the eight? Benefiting living beings without expecting a reward; bearing all afflictions on behalf of all living beings; dedicating all merits one produces to them; being equal-minded toward living beings, humble and without hindrance; regarding all bodhisattvas as the Buddha, and hearing sūtras not heard before without doubting them; not going contrary to the śrāvakas; not being jealous of others' offerings nor proud of one's own gain, but subduing one's mind therein; constantly examining one's own faults and not speaking of others' shortcomings, always seeking all merits with single-mindedness. These are the eight dharmas by which one practices without blemish and is born in the Pure Land.'"
