Formerly, when I, Jingzhi, read the Dharma words of Master Yunqi, I came to know of the Pure Land gate. However, I still considered pure karma and Chan to be just like spring orchids and autumn chrysanthemums, each having its own beauty, without knowing that pure karma is itself the unsurpassed, profound, and wondrous Chan. In the winter of the dinghai year, I went to the Ancestral Hall to pay respects to Master Ouyi and heard the discourse on the non-duality of Chan and the Pure Land, stating that not only can they not be divided, but they also do not wait to be joined. Although I admired this, I secretly doubted it. Now, having read this 'Direct Pointers to Buddha-Mindfulness,' I finally believe that Master Ouyi's words were truly not mere personal conjecture, and I also believe that Master Yongming's Fourfold Evaluation does not deceive me at all. Therefore, I made every effort to solicit broad support to carve the printing blocks and circulate the text, and all my friends also rejoiced and gladly contributed. One should know that the great vow-power of Amitābha has long penetrated human minds! The carving now complete, I respectfully write a few lines of afterword to record this Dharma joy. On the full moon of mid-autumn in the xinmao year, Che Jingzhi, disciple of pure karma, wrote this at the Four Lotuses Abode, at the age of sixty.
