「香光識劣根微，久為空見所醉，縱情肆志，有若狂象。去年沈洄之夜，親遊鬲子地獄，烈火洞然，見所熟譚空破戒亡僧，形容尫羸，跛足而過，哭聲震地，殆不忍聞。及寤身毛為竪，遂亦發心歸依淨土；後讀此論，宿疑氷釋。所以今日不憚苦口，病夫知醫、浪子憐客，汝宜盡剗舊日知見，虛心誦習，自當有入。生死事大，莫久遲疑！」

"Xiangguang's discernment was poor and his roots meager; he had long been intoxicated by the view of emptiness, indulging his sentiments and giving free rein to his will like a mad elephant. On the night of [the month of] Chenhui last year, I personally visited the Gezi Hell. Blazing fires glowed intensely, and I saw a deceased monk whom I had known to talk of emptiness while breaking the precepts. His form was emaciated and frail, and he passed by limping, his weeping shaking the ground—scarcely could one bear to hear it! Upon awakening, my body hairs stood on end, and I thereupon resolved to take refuge in the Pure Land. Later, reading this treatise, my long-held doubts melted like ice. That is why today I do not shy away from bitter speech: a sick man knows medicine, and a wanderer pities a guest. You ought to completely eradicate your former views, and with an open mind recite and study it; you will naturally have an entry. The matter of saṃsāra is great; do not hesitate for long!"
