Fifth, as for the inconceivable meaning of the ultimately inconceivable: it is like the mountain's reflection in a clear pool, like the hundred grasses in the spring sun, like the karma-power of sentient beings, like the light-characteristics of the sun and moon, like the sense-faculties in the womb, like the self within the body, like teeth being hard and the tongue soft, like eyebrows being horizontal and hair growing long—this is the inconceivable meaning of the ultimately inconceivable. For this reason, even when the buddhas of the ten directions pour out their hearts and gall, they can only call it rare and difficult to believe; though having tongue-characteristics that cover the three-thousand great-thousand [worlds], how could they explain even one part in ten thousand! Confucius said: 'The ignorance of common men and women can know it, yet when it comes to its utmost reach, even the sage does not know.' Utmost indeed are these words! The immeasurable Dharma gates are threaded through by this single principle.
