Now, the main purport of the Western Land is self-evident in the sūtras, and the essential gate to the Pure Land is fully explained in the various treatises. Masters such as Vasubandhu, Zhiyi, Haedong, and Yuexi have all brought to light its subtle profundities and extolled its essential tenets. In recent times, Upādhyāya Yunqi wrote his Commentary and Subcommentary on the Shorter Sūtra, which is categorized and analyzed, refined and vast, profound and extensive—truly a great torch illuminating the dark road at night, a light boat crossing the ocean of suffering. What these masters have revealed leaves nothing hidden. However, in the various sūtras, teachings were established according to circumstances, and doctrines were expounded to match faculties, so differences sometimes appear, leading scholars to generate doubt and apprehension. Now I shall briefly bring them forward, broadly collect various treatises, add my humble views, and harmonize them into a single place for the convenience of study and investigation.
