Eighth are those who fall into mind-only. They say that the Pure Land of self-nature is such that the conventional is ever the true; seven jewels and broken tiles are equal in the one Way; if one merely purifies one's own mind, what need is there for discrimination? In reply: You say that when the mind is pure, the land is pure and there is no need for discrimination. Were you led into a privy, could you stay there long? Entering a field of corpses where foul odors smoke and burn, would you not cover your nose? With people afflicted by scabies, leprosy, pus, and blood, could you share an almsbowl and bedding? If you cannot, these marks are precisely the marks of loathing the five defilements. If dwelling still requires a clean room, and companions still require pure associates, these marks are precisely the marks of rejoicing in the Pure Land. When rejoicing and loathing are blazing, how can you speak of equality? Even if you can endure what is difficult to endure and do not seek to distance yourself from the various foul defilements mentioned above, dung beetles, crows, and dogs can also draw near to them; have these various creatures all attained the Way? If you discard both purity and defilement, you are still accepting and rejecting, and you still do not accord with the meaning of mind-only. Therefore, you should know that precisely because it is mind-only, the Buddhas produce rejoicing and loathing; precisely because it is mind-only, they speak of equality; and precisely because it is mind-only, they adorn the Buddha lands. If it were not mind-only, how could it follow thought? If it were not equal, ordinary persons would have no share in it. When defilement is not even abandoned, why abandon only purity? Since abandonment is mind, how does acceptance contradict it? It is all due to not understanding the Buddha's intent that this false attachment arises; if one merely recognizes mind-only, doubts and objections will be resolved.
