Aspiring for rebirth, aspiring for rebirth! / The three realms have no peace, like a burning house; / in the six paths they wander in panic, rushing for an exit. / The gates are not the same—eighty-four thousand; / each and every one presents itself right before the mind's eye. / Abandoning [it], they wish to leave, but turn and go right back; / it is this very avidyā that misleads and ruins people. / Greed for wealth and lust for beauty are insatiable; / ephemeral, empty blossoms and illusory deceits falsely draw them close. / When wealth is spent and beauty fades, they loathe and resent one another; / in an instant, ties are severed as if between butcher and foe. / Such butchers and foes fill the entire Sahā [world]; / all sentient and feeling beings are just the same. / For this reason, the Tathāgata specifically pointed and taught, / encouraging [us] to cultivate exclusively the cause of the Pure Land. / Once the cause of the Pure Land is accomplished, one arrives naturally; / at the end of life, palms joined, one offers up fragrant smoke. / The fragrant smoke ascends straight to Amitābha Buddha; / the assembly of sages, holding flowers, welcomes my body. / At once one sits upon a flower dais, all of golden hue; / arriving there, the uncontaminated [realm] is truly real. / With streaming tears, may the assembly all aspire for rebirth, / holding incense and flowers in hand, ever making offerings.
