We vow to be reborn! We vow to be reborn! / Amitābha's attendants are the two bodhisattvas, / one named the boundless Avalokiteśvara; / at all times they assist in the Buddha's transforming work, / dividing their bodies into the six paths to give rise to compassionate thoughts. / In thought after thought, according to each capacity, they preach the Dharma, / yet dim and hard to awaken are those whose roots of sin are deep. / Though in hundreds of thousands and tens of millions [of Buddhas] have appeared in the world, / not one in ten thousand escapes the troublesome cage. / Mindful of you sentient beings enduring eons of suffering, / facing the Buddhas, you do not meet them. / Even the small virtues of humans and devas are hard to discern; / how much more the unconditioned realization of the six supernormal knowledges? / Though one may hear this rare Dharma, / with a coarse mind and negligence, all benefit is void of merit; / even if year after year one walks on foot, / all one pursues fills the chest with greed and anger. / Greed and anger are precisely the three karmic activities of the body; / how can they open the Pure Land that enfolds true emptiness? / We send word to our fellow-born kalyāṇamitras: / recite the Buddha with compassion and enter the flock of sages. / May the entire assembly incline their hearts and all vow to go; / holding fragrant flowers in hand, let us make constant offerings.
