When entering contemplation or at the time of sleep, one should make this vow. Whether sitting or standing, single-mindedly join the palms, face directly to the west, and recite ten times the names of Amitābha Buddha, Avalokiteśvara, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, and the Bodhisattvas of the pure, great ocean-like assembly. Having finished: 'Disciple [so-and-so] is currently an ordinary being of birth and death, with profound and heavy karmic obstacles, sinking into the sufferings of the six paths beyond full description. Today, encountering a spiritual friend, I have obtained hearing of the name of Amitābha's primal vow; single-mindedly I recite it, seeking and vowing for rebirth. May the Buddha in his compassion not abandon his original universal vow and gather me in. The disciple does not know Amitābha Buddha's bodily marks and radiant light; may the Buddha in his compassion manifest to the disciple his bodily marks, Avalokiteśvara, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, the Bodhisattvas, and the like, as well as the pure adornments and radiant light of that realm.' Having spoken these words, with single-minded right mindfulness, one then enters contemplation or sleeps as one pleases. Some see it right at the time of making the vow, while others see it at the time of sleep, except for those lacking a sincere mind. This vow has recently had great verification.
