Long ago there was an ascetic named Sumati, / Who once purchased five stems of lotuses; / He held them to offer to Dīpaṅkara Buddha, / And because of the flowers, his fruit was titled the Honoured Śākya. / All sūtras speak of wonderful gāthās; / Scattering flowers in offering brings great fields of merit. / Merely scattering a single flower to a single Buddha, / Because of flowers, all come to see Amitābha. / When wise people of the present see the texts of the sūtras, / Which state that flowers are the cause for attaining buddhahood, / They immediately scatter flowers in offering to the Buddha, / And further use flowers to deliver those with affinity. / In profusion, when flowers are seen being scattered, / Petals of blue lotuses fly in the sky; / Everyone competes to step forward and hold them in their hands, / Each person gathering them into the folds of their robes to take back. / In the sky, petal after petal, celestial flowers rain down; / Scattering them, everyone gives rise to sprouts of the Way. / If only you diligently offer flowers, / The fields of merit will each extend over Ganges sands. / Flying flowers rustle and fill the sky; / Kingfisher leaves flutter and fill the realm. / Dripping down like birds amid the clouds, / In profusion they escort you into the lotus palace. / The lotus blossoms are luxuriant, vast, and level; / Upon the flowers, flocks of bodhisattvas walk. / Constantly they scatter flowers in offering to the Buddha, / Frequently proclaiming the sounds of the five tones. / Various holy assemblies gather flowers in the folds of their robes; / Each person makes offerings throughout all lands numerous as Ganges sands. / At the time of every meal they return to their own realm; / In every step they do not leave the home of the universe. / Constantly the heavens rain down myriad kinds of flowers; / Everywhere they can cause sprouts of the Way to grow. / Each and every one is taken to offer to the Buddhas; / Every morning they are constantly in the Dharma King's house. / Fresh flowers of a hundred jewels flutter down; / In the sky they sing praises of the inconceivable. / If there are sentient beings who can offer them, / In the future they will certainly realize the unconditioned. / Upon the adamantine terrace the true teaching is spoken; / The bodhisattvas of the West are all alike: / Scattering flowers in offering without rest, / All are born upon flowers, endowed with supernormal powers. / Dense fragrances become increasingly continuous; / Flowers go and flowers come, the flowers ever fresher. / In the clear dawn they constantly bear them to offer to other realms; / By mealtime they return before the World-Honoured One.
