At the first tone, discursive thoughts are eliminated; / The second tone is loud, resounding everywhere to those with affinity; / The third reverberates with inner elegance; / The fourth harmonizes with birds, truly lovely; / The fifth shakes the world so that celestial māras scatter, / Enabling the practitioner to enter deep dhyāna. / Within the sounds of the five tones are ten kinds of benefits, / Intended to make practitioners firm in their application of mind. / The wondrous sounds of the five tones are maṇi jewels, / Able to rain down boundless wealth of the holy Dharma. / The wise must train according to this; / At the end of life, in a single thought they will sit on the flower terrace. / I send word to the present great assembly: / Buddha-mindfulness in the five tones brings endless benefits. / Those who practice together in the bodhimaṇḍa today / Will surely be led together to sit in the flower palace. / The holy teaching of the five tones is the true tenet; / It surely abandons Sahā to exit the cage of suffering. / If you all bring forth the aspiration and dedicate your vows toward rebirth, / You will attain supernormal powers in the Western world. / The jeweled groves are dense, forming kingfisher-green groves; / The gentle breeze of the five tones proclaims pure sounds. / Rain of flowers falls everywhere in the six periods of the day; / Those who see and hear it bring forth the true mind. / All of you now give rise to faithful minds; / Those who listen to Amitābha's Dharma of the five tones, / Exclusively seek and do not forget to recite his name, / And will be welcomed to Sukhāvatī to sit in the flower grove. / The harmonious resonance of the five tones praises the ponds and city; / Towers and pavilions rise luxuriantly, green against the clouds. / Lapis lazuli, seven jewels, and cords of gold are their fruits; / In every household one hears only the sound of buddha-mindfulness. / Amitābha's five tones are a ferry boat, / Constantly plying the ocean of suffering through eternal kalpas. / If only you hear the sound, all will be liberated, / Certainly transcending birth and death, departing from humans and devas.
