Through karmic connections of accumulated kalpas, / one now comes to entrust oneself to the mother's womb. / After a month or more, the five bodily stages arise; / in seven-times-seven days, the six sense-faculties open. / Gradually it grows heavy as a mountain peak; / moving or rising, she fears injury to the body. / Fine silk garments are not draped at all; / the Qin mirror gathers dust. / Bearing the womb toward the tenth month, / the distress of childbirth is about to arrive. / Morning after morning is like a grave illness; / day after day she sighs and moans. / Terrified and at a loss for what to do, / sorrow and anxiety fill her breast. / Weeping tears, she calls for kin and relatives, / fearing only that death approaches to invade. / The months completed, the birth draws near; / the time of giving birth is truly difficult. / Her five viscera feel as if violently severed; / neighbors vie to come and see. / Born upon the straw, / bystanders say it is a boy; / hearing this, the mother cries out in joy, / forgetting the pain that bound her body. / The mother's body lies in the wet place, / moving the child to the dry. / Blood and milk satisfy hunger and thirst; / silk garments shield from wind and cold. / Spitting out the sweet without stinginess, / swallowing the bitter without knitting her brows: / so long as her child is fed full, / the compassionate mother does not mind her own hunger. / With the passing of years the child gradually grows up; / whenever he goes out, the mother's heart follows. / If one day a son or daughter falls ill, / she laments that she cannot take it upon her own body. / Parting from the beloved is hard to bear; / living separation truly grieves the heart. / If the child travels a hundred li, / the compassionate mother's [mind travels] well over a thousand. / Grown sons are drafted for military campaigns; / grown daughters serve in others' households. / When the winter season arrives, / the compassionate mother's tears soak her collar. / Every day she yearns for her sons and daughters; / whenever the day comes, she repeatedly inquires. / If she receives good news, / she prepares fine food and cultivates fields of merit. / Though parents grow old, / their love and pity never cease. / Though a hundred years of age, / she ever worries for her eighty-year-old child. / Thus know that love and kindness are heavy; / now when the five consciousnesses separate, / even at the Yellow Springs she will not abandon him; / even as a ghost she will still grieve for him. / All who are sons and daughters / should serve diligently without wavering. / As the ancestral lineages have taught above, / to hear and yet not act is improper conduct. / Strive to practice filial piety; / through filial conduct establish your reputation. / Sovereign Heaven will assist you, / and all buddhas will praise you as well. / If in mind one commits the five rebellious sins, / Sovereign Heaven will not protect them. / I urge you to cultivate the three meritorious karmas; / then the Pure Land will become clear before your eyes. / Universally I announce to all people: / though journeying together, minds are not alike; / if you attain rebirth in the Land of Sukhāvatī, / among the flowers you shall hear the Dharma sound.
