薄伽梵「正法眼藏涅槃妙心」付摩訶迦葉，是為第一祖。逮二十八祖菩提達磨提十方三世諸佛密印而來震旦，是時中國始知佛法有教外別傳、不立文字、直指人心、見性成佛。厥後優鉢羅花於時出現，芬芳馥郁，一華五葉，香風匝地、寶色照天，各放無量光明，輝映大千世界。

The Bhagavat entrusted the 'treasury of the true Dharma eye, the sublime mind of nirvāṇa' to Mahākāśyapa, who became the first patriarch. Reaching the twenty-eighth patriarch Bodhidharma, he brought the esoteric seal of all Buddhas throughout the ten directions and the three times and came to Cīnasthāna; only then did China first know that the Buddha Dharma contains a special transmission outside the teachings, not establishing words and letters, directly pointing to the human mind, and seeing into one's nature and attaining Buddhahood. After that, the utpala flower appeared in its season, rich with fragrance, one flower with five petals, its fragrant wind encircling the earth and its precious light illuminating heaven, each radiating immeasurable brilliance to illuminate the great trichiliocosm.
