"Followers of the Way, what further doubt does a great hero have? That which functions right before your eyes—who else is it? Take hold of it and use it! Do not attach names to it and call it the 'profound purport.' When seen in this way, there is no phenomenon to be loathed. An ancient said: 'The mind turns in accord with the ten thousand spheres; / The turning point is truly profound. / Following the flow, recognize the nature, / And there is neither joy nor sorrow.' Followers of the Way, regarding the insights of the Chan school, life and death follow on naturally; practitioners must examine this with utmost care. When host and guest meet, there is an exchange of words: sometimes adapting to things and manifesting forms, sometimes acting with the entire substance, sometimes taking expedient devices of joy or anger, sometimes revealing half the body, sometimes riding a lion, or riding an elephant king. If there is a true student, he immediately gives a shout, first bringing out a basin of glue. If the kalyāṇamitra does not recognize this as an objective sphere, he steps upon that sphere and puts on airs. The student then gives a shout, but the other refuses to let go. This is a fatal disease beyond cure, called 'guest looks at host.' Or the kalyāṇamitra brings out nothing, but snatches away wherever the student questions. The student, having been snatched away, resists unto death and does not let go; this is called 'host looks at guest.' Or a student manifests an objective sphere of purity before the kalyāṇamitra; the kalyāṇamitra, discerning it as a sphere, takes hold of it and flings it into a pit. The student says: 'An excellent kalyāṇamitra!' [The teacher] immediately says: 'Bah! You cannot tell good from bad.' The student then bows; this is called 'host looks at host.' Or a student comes before the kalyāṇamitra wearing a cangue and carrying chains; the kalyāṇamitra places another layer of cangue and chains upon him, and the student rejoices. Neither of them discerns [the other]; this is called 'guest looks at guest.'
