「大德！莫因循過日。山僧往日未有見處時，黑漫漫地，光陰不可空過，腹熱心忙，奔波訪道，後還得力，始到今日共道流如是話度。勸諸道流莫為衣食，看世界易過，善知識難遇，如優曇花時一現耳。

"Worthies, do not let your days pass aimlessly. In former times, when this mountain monk had not yet attained insight, all was total darkness. Time could not be spent in vain; with an anxious belly and a frantic mind, I bustled about seeking the Way. Later, when I finally obtained strength, I only then reached today's ability to speak with you followers of the Way like this. I urge all you followers of the Way: do not live just for food and clothes. See how easily the world passes away, and how difficult it is to encounter a kalyāṇamitra—appearing only once in a while, like an udumbara flower!
