"Now, the Way of the ultimate principle is not about seeking provocation through dispute, or making a clatter to crush outsiders. Down to the mutual transmission of the Buddhas and patriarchs, there has never been any other intention. If there are verbal teachings, they fall under the transformative forms: the three vehicles, the five natures, and the cause and effect of humans and devas. In the case of the complete and sudden teaching, it is not so at all; the youth Sudhana never sought beyond it. Worthies, do not misapply your minds! Just as the great ocean does not retain dead corpses, you merely shoulder them, intending to run about the world, giving rise to obstacles of views of your own accord to obstruct your minds. When there are no clouds above the sun, it shines radiantly throughout the heavens. When there are no cataracts in the eye, there are no flowers in the sky. Followers of the Way, if you wish to conform to the Dharma, simply do not give rise to doubts. Expand it, and it envelopes the dharmadhātu; contract it, and not a hair or thread is established. Clearly and uniquely luminous, it has never been lacking. Eyes cannot see it, ears cannot hear it—what thing can you call it? An ancient said: 'To say it is like something would miss the mark.' Just look into yourself; what else is there? Talking is endless. Each of you, exert your strength! Take care."
