師因入軍營赴齋，門首見員僚，師指露柱問：「是凡？是聖？」員僚無語。師打露柱，云：「直饒道得，也秖是箇木橛。」便入去。

Once, when the Master went to a military camp to attend a vegetarian feast, he saw an official at the gate. The Master pointed to an exposed pillar and asked, "Is this an ordinary person or a sage?" The official had no words. The Master struck the pillar and said, "Even if you could speak, it is still only a wooden peg." He then went inside.
