趙州行脚時參師，遇師洗脚次，州便問：「如何是祖師西來意？」師云：「恰值老僧洗脚。」州近前作聽勢，師云：「更要第二杓惡水潑在。」州便下去。

When Zhaozhou was on pilgrimage, he came to visit the master. Meeting the master just as he was washing his feet, Zhou thereupon asked, "What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?" The master said, "It just happens that the old monk is washing his feet." Zhou stepped forward and made a gesture of listening intently. The master said, "Do you want a second ladle of dirty water splashed on you?" Zhou thereupon departed.
