麻谷到參，敷坐具，問：「十二面觀音，阿那面正？」師下繩床，一手收坐具，一手搊麻谷，云：「十二面觀音，向什麼處去也？」麻谷轉身擬坐繩床，師拈拄杖打，麻谷接却，相捉入方丈。

When Magu came for an interview, he spread his sitting mat and asked, "Of the twelve-faced Avalokiteśvara, which face is the primary one?" The master stepped down from his rope chair, gathered up the sitting mat with one hand and seized Magu with the other, saying, "Where has the twelve-faced Avalokiteśvara gone?" Magu turned around and was about to sit on the rope chair; the master took up his staff and struck him. Magu parried it, and gripping each other they entered the Abbot's quarters.
