1.82

徑山有五百眾，少人參請，黃蘗令師到徑山，乃謂師曰：「汝到彼作麼生？」師云：「某甲到彼自有方便。」師到徑山，裝腰上法堂見徑山。徑山方舉頭，師便喝。徑山擬開口，師拂袖便行。尋有僧問徑山：「這僧適來有什麼言句便喝和尚？」徑山云：「這僧從黃蘗會裏來，爾要知麼？且問取他。」徑山五百眾太半分散。

At Jingshan there was an assembly of five hundred, but few people went to ask for instruction. Huangbo ordered the master to go to Jingshan, saying to him, "When you arrive there, what will you do?" The master said, "When I arrive there, I will have my own expedients." When the master arrived at Jingshan, still in his travelling clothes, he went up to the Dharma Hall to see Jingshan. Jingshan just raised his head, and the master gave a shout. As Jingshan was about to open his mouth, the master flicked his sleeves and walked out. Soon a monk asked Jingshan, "What words did that monk just say that made him shout at the Venerable?" Jingshan said, "This monk came from Huangbo's assembly. If you want to know, just go ask him." More than half of Jingshan's five hundred monks dispersed.
