"You say that the Buddha's possession of the six supernormal knowledges is inconceivable. All the gods, immortals, asuras, and mighty ghosts also have supernormal powers; should they be Buddhas? Followers of the Way, make no mistake! For instance, when the asura fought with Śakra, Lord of the Gods, and was defeated in battle, he led his eighty-four thousand followers into the hole of a lotus fiber to hide. Could he be a sage? Such instances as this mountain monk has cited are all powers of karma, powers of reliance. But as for the Buddha's six supernormal knowledges, it is not so: entering the realm of sights, he is not deluded by sights; entering the realm of sounds, he is not deluded by sounds; entering the realm of scents, he is not deluded by scents; entering the realm of tastes, he is not deluded by tastes; entering the realm of tangibles, he is not deluded by tangibles; entering the realm of phenomena, he is not deluded by phenomena. Therefore, understanding that the six kinds—sights, sounds, scents, tastes, tangibles, and phenomena—are all empty characteristics, they cannot bind him. This person of the Way who relies on nothing, though having a defiled body of the five aggregates, walks upon the earth with supernormal powers.
