A monk asked, “What is the true Buddha, the true Dharma, and the true Way? We beg your instruction.” The Master said, “The Buddha is the mind’s purity; the Dharma is the mind’s brilliance; the Way is the unobstructed pure light in all places. The three are the one; all are empty names and have no real existence. Just like a person who genuinely studies the Way, thought after thought the mind is uninterrupted. Since Great Master Bodhidharma came from the Western Land, he sought only a person who would not be deluded by others. Later he met the Second Patriarch, who understood at a single word, only then realising that previously he had exerted effort in vain. This mountain monk's insight today is no different from that of the patriarchs and Buddhas. If you attain it in the first phrase, you become the teacher of the patriarchs and Buddhas; if you attain it in the second phrase, you become the teacher of humans and devas; if you attain it in the third phrase, you cannot even save yourself.”
