A monk asked, “‘The Buddha of Supreme Penetration and Surpassing Wisdom sat at the bodhimaṇḍa for ten kalpas, yet the Buddha-Dharma did not appear before him, and he could not achieve the Buddha Way.’ I do not yet understand the meaning of this; I beg the Master to instruct me.” The Master said, “‘Supreme Penetration’ is oneself: penetrating everywhere to the fact that the ten thousand dharmas have no nature and no marks is called Supreme Penetration. ‘Surpassing Wisdom’ means having no doubt anywhere and not attaining a single dharma; this is called Surpassing Wisdom. ‘Buddha’ means the mind is pure and its light penetrates the dharmadhātu; this gets the name ‘Buddha’. ‘Sitting at the bodhimaṇḍa for ten kalpas’ refers to the ten pāramitās. ‘The Buddha-Dharma did not appear before him’ means that the Buddha is originally unborn and the Dharma is originally unceasing; how could there be an appearing before him? ‘Could not achieve the Buddha Way’ means that a Buddha should not further become a Buddha. An ancient said: ‘The Buddha is constantly in the world, yet unstained by worldly dharmas.’ Followers of the Way! If you wish to become a Buddha, do not follow the ten thousand things. When the mind arises, various dharmas arise; when the mind ceases, various dharmas cease. When the single mind does not arise, the ten thousand dharmas are without fault. In the mundane and the supramundane, there is no Buddha and no Dharma; neither do they appear before you, nor have they ever been lost. Even if they exist, they are all names, words, chapters, and phrases, established to guide small children as medicine for an illness, manifesting names and phrases. Moreover, names and phrases are not names and phrases of themselves; it is this clearly luminous, discerning, perceiving, hearing, knowing, and illuminating one before you right now that establishes all names and phrases. Virtuous monks! Only by creating the five karmas of immediate retribution does one attain liberation.”
