“Followers of the Way! Do not take what this mountain monk says. Why? What I say has no reliance or basis. For a time it is sketching pictures in empty space, like the metaphor of colourful painted images. Followers of the Way! Do not take the Buddha to be the ultimate; in my view, he is just like a latrine hole. Bodhisattvas and arhats are all cangues and locks, things that bind people. Therefore, Mañjuśrī brandished a sword to kill Gautama, and Aṅgulimāla held a blade to harm the Śākya. Followers of the Way! There is no Buddha to be attained; even the traces of the teachings of the three vehicles, five natures, and the complete and sudden are all temporary remedies for treating illnesses, and there is no real dharma at all. Even if there were, they are all approximations, manifesting roadmaps and arrangements of words—it is just spoken like this for now.”
