One day, the Master accompanied Puhua to a vegetarian feast at a patron's house. The Master asked, "'A hair swallows the vast ocean; a mustard seed contains Mount Sumeru'—is this the wondrous functioning of spiritual powers, or is the original substance like this?" Puhua kicked over the dining table. The Master said, "Too coarse!" Puhua said, "What place is this to speak of coarse or fine?" The next day, the Master again accompanied Puhua to a feast. He asked, "How does today's offering compare to yesterday's?" Puhua, as before, kicked over the dining table. The Master said, "Granted that you have it, it is still too coarse!" Puhua said, "Blind fellow! What does the Buddha-Dharma have to do with coarse and fine?" The Master then stuck out his tongue.
