One day in the marketplace, Puhua begged people for a robe. Everyone gave him one, but Puhua refused them all. The master had the monastery director buy a coffin. When Puhua returned, the master said, "I have made a robe for you." Puhua shouldered it himself and went around the streets shouting, "Linji made a robe for me! I am going to the East Gate to pass away." The townspeople vied to follow and watch. Puhua said, "Not today; tomorrow I will go to the South Gate to pass away." This went on for three days, and nobody believed him. On the fourth day, no one followed to watch; he went out of the city walls alone, got into the coffin himself, and asked a passer-by to nail it shut. Word spread immediately, and the townspeople rushed to open the coffin, only to find that his whole body had cast off and vanished; they only heard the faint chiming of his hand-bell receding into the sky.
