Once while the master was hoeing the ground during communal labor, he saw Huangbo coming, leaned on his mattock, and stood still. Huangbo said, "Is this fellow tired?" The master said, "I haven't even lifted the mattock; what is there to be tired of?" Huangbo struck him; the master caught the stick and shoved him over with a push. Huangbo called out, "Karmadāna! Karmadāna! Help me up!" The karmadāna stepped forward to help him up and said, "How can the Venerable permit this madman such rudeness?" As soon as Huangbo got up, he struck the karmadāna. The master, hoeing the ground, said, "Everywhere else they cremate, but here I bury alive all at once!" Later Guishan asked Yangshan, "What was Huangbo's meaning in striking the karmadāna?" Yangshan said, "The actual thief escaped, and the pursuer got the stick."
