Longya visited Deshan and asked, "From afar I heard of Deshan's single phrase of the Buddha Dharma, but when I arrived, I have never seen the upādhyāya speak a single phrase of the Buddha Dharma." Deshan said, "What do you dislike?" Longya was not satisfied, so he went to the Master's Dharma seat and asked him as before. The Master said, "How can you blame this old monk?" Longya also cited: "The other day I asked Deshan: 'What if a student takes up the sword Moxie and intends to take the master's head?' Deshan stretched his neck forward and said, 'Gah!' Longya said, 'The head has fallen.' Deshan smiled slightly." The Master said, "What did Deshan say?" He said, "Deshan had no words." The Master said, "Do not say he had no words; just bring Deshan's fallen head and present it to this old monk." Longya realised his error, repented, and apologised; thereupon he stayed at the Master's assembly and joined the community in asking for instruction.
