巖頭參德山，頭入方丈門，跨門問：「是凡是聖？」山便喝，頭禮拜。有人舉似師，師曰：「若不是奯上座，大難承當。」頭曰：「洞山老人不識好惡，錯下名言，我當時一手擡、一手搦。」琅瑘覺云：「巖頭無人問著，不妨奇特，纔被洞山腦後一錐，直得瓦解氷消。」

When Yantou visited Deshan, he entered the door of the abbot's quarters and, straddling the threshold, asked, "Is it ordinary or is it sacred?" Deshan gave a shout, and Yantou made a prostration. Someone cited this to the Master. The Master said, "Were it not for Senior Huo, it would have been very hard to bear." Yantou said, "Old man Dongshan does not know good from bad and gives mistaken appraisals. At that time I raised with one hand and pressed down with the other." Langye Jue said, "When Yantou was not questioned by anyone, he was extraordinarily remarkable; but as soon as he received a blow to the back of his head from Dongshan, he utterly collapsed like crumbling tiles and melting ice."
