On the first day of the third month in the jichou year, the tenth year of Xiantong, the Master ordered his head shaved, bathed his body, donned his robe, sounded the bell, bade farewell to the assembly, and sat upright to pass away. At that time the great assembly wailed in grief without stopping for several hours. The Master suddenly opened his eyes and said to the assembly, "Now, for those who have left the household, the mind does not depend on things; this is true cultivation. Working through life and resting in death—what has grief to do with it?" He then summoned the monastic administrator and ordered him to prepare a foolish feast for the whole community, as a rebuke for their sentimental attachment. The assembly still yearned [for him] without ceasing, delaying until the seventh day before the food and utensils were finally prepared. The Master also took part in the feast. When it was finished, he said, "Monks should have no concerns; as a rule, why be so clamorous on the verge of departure?" On the eighth day, having bathed, he sat upright and passed away forever. His age was sixty-three; his monastic age was forty-two. By imperial order he was bestowed the posthumous title Great Master Wuben, and his stūpa was named Huijue.
