I observe that the sound beyond rhyme borrows mysterious chants to clarify the sect; deep discourse entering the principle integrates the purport through effortless action. Blended into one are substance and function, windingly shifting between partial and complete, just like the butcher handling the blade or Wheelwright Bian mastering his craft. The empty and mysterious are not infringed upon; interchanging and obliquely participating, lodging in the bird's path that clears the empty sky, encompassing all by the mysterious path. Yet although the empty substance is utterly tranquil, it does not contradict the multitude of movements. Having no phrase within a phrase, the wonder lies before the substance; having words within no words, the return path is wondrous once again. Therefore, functioning without moving, tranquil without coagulating; the pure wind bends the grass without shaking it, and the bright moon covers the sky without deliberate illumination. The parasol tree does not lodge the cinnabar phoenix; how could the clear pool drown the red wheel [of the sun]? Solitary but not lonely, rootless yet forever firm; dual brightness in equal rhyme, phenomenon and principle mutually fused. Thus when the high snow-song is sung, those who harmonize are rare indeed; when the cloth drum hangs by the veranda, who will strike it? Without reaching the wondrous purport, it is difficult to fathom the subtle profundity. If, perchance, functioning without effort, tranquil with empty illumination, phenomenon and principle both bright, substance and function without obstruction—such is the purport within the mystery.
