The ancient path is level and broad, yet who sets foot on it? / No one knows how to sing the song of returning home. / Under the clear wind and moon, the man who watches the stump; / The cold rabbit gradually recedes, and the spring grass turns green. / Heavenly fragrance assails, yet its sweetness is cut off; / Moonlight congeals, yet it is not a shining lamp. / Walking the mystery is still treading rugged terrain; / Embodying the wondrous thereby turns its back on long and short. / If not so at all, how could it expand or contract? / Even if achieved, mud and jade are mingled. / When the xiezhi shares the same pen, the discerning laugh; / When sweet basil and foul weed dwell together, their aromas must be distinguished. / The moon in the vast sky fills the wide valley; / The ceaseless wind bends the pines and bamboos. / Now arriving here, I attain ease and freedom; / My teacher shouts at me to follow along. / The path of Xinfeng is steep and cracked; / The cave of Xinfeng is deep and overflowing. / Let those who climb, climb without wavering; / Let those who wander, wander without haste. / Clear away brambles and put down the axes and hoes; / Drink the fragrance and taste the clear purity. / Bearing heavy loads to ascend, one turns back having discarded one's sandals; / Look at him: already his burden is empty and curved. / Shoulders touch in coming, treading in the fragrant footprints; / Reaching to clear the mind, leaving to congeal within oneself. / Though there are pavilions and halls, few are those who reach them; / The forest and springs do not grow ordinary trees. / The Way is not carved or chiseled, nor is it curved or distorted; / When the man of Ying advances, what does he look around for? / If effort does not reach, it will not be square or round; / If language does not communicate, they are not of the family. / If the matter is not so, how could it obscure the sunrise? / If I am not so, how could there be continuity or disruption? / Diligently I tell those on the path: / If you cling to the mysterious pass, you will only be bound.
