The faithful layman Seizaemon was a man of Nonomura in Tanba province, of the Sugawara clan, a descendant of Minister Sugawara. Nowadays, because few people of that surname remained in that locality, he chose to dwell in the capital, submerging himself in the marketplace. Throughout his life he took refuge in the Three Jewels and observed the etiquette of a disciple; his Dharma name was Jitan, and his style was Senkai. Formerly, he had a daughter who died young, and his wife also passed away. Today we met by chance, and he said to me: “Recently I heard that the Venerable One is compiling the recorded sayings of Great Master Dongshan. Is this true or not?” I said: “It is true.” He said: “I venture to request to donate funds to print this record so as to widen its transmission. May the thousand-year-old lofty melody of Xinfeng resonate with its rare sound in our land; and may those who hear this lingering tune pierce their deaf ears and cease their confused seeking. May the merit gathered from this supreme deed be dedicated to the post-mortem bliss of my wife Zishao and my daughter Zhizhen.” I said: “It is well.” He joyfully complied. Indicated to the right is his Dharma name.
