師幼歲從師，因念《般若心經》至無眼耳鼻舌身意處，忽以手捫面，問師曰：「某甲有眼耳鼻舌等，何故經言無？」其師駭然異之曰：「吾非汝師。」即指往五洩山禮靈默禪師。

When the Master was young, he followed a master. While reciting the Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya, he came to the passage 'no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, or mind.' He suddenly touched his face with his hand and asked his master: 'I have eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and so forth; why does the sūtra say they do not exist?' His master was astonished and marvelled at him, saying: 'I am not your teacher.' He immediately directed him to Mount Wuxie to pay reverence to Chan Master Lingmo.
