1.55

示眾曰：「知有佛向上人，方有語話分。」時有僧問：「如何是佛向上人？」師曰：「非佛。」保福別云：「佛非？」雲門云：「名不得、狀不得，所以言非。」法眼別云：「方便呼為佛。」師又曰：「塵中不染丈夫兒。」雲門云：「拄杖但喚作拄杖，一切但喚作一切。」

Instructing the assembly, he said: "Only when you know there is a person beyond the Buddha do you have a share in speech and conversation." At that time, a monk asked: "What is the person beyond the Buddha?" The Master said: "Not Buddha." Baofu gave an alternative turning phrase: "Buddha is not?" Yunmen said: "He cannot be named, nor can he be depicted; therefore it is said 'not'." Fayan gave an alternative turning phrase: "Expediently called Buddha." The Master also said: "A hero unstained amidst the dust." Yunmen said: "A staff is simply called a staff; all things are simply called all things."
