A monk of Jiangling called upon Dachuan (also called Taihu). Chuan asked, "When did you set out from Jiangling?" The monk lifted up his sitting-mat. Chuan said, "I thank you for coming from afar. Step down." The monk circled the meditation platform once and went out. Chuan said, "If not for doing so, how could one know the eye of reality?" The monk clapped his hands and said, "How agonizing! I nearly misjudged the old venerable masters of the various directions." Chuan said, "You have thoroughly grasped the principle of the Chan school." The monk cited this to Danxia. Danxia said, "In Dachuan's way of the Dharma, it works, but here with me it is not so." The monk said, "I do not know what it is like here." Danxia said, "You still fall short of Dachuan by three paces." The monk bowed. Danxia said, "There are many who misjudge the [masters of the] various directions." The Master said, "Had it not been for Danxia, it would be difficult to distinguish jade from stone."
