1.36

The Master went with Senior Uncle Mi to the place of Chan Master Baiyan Zhe. Yan asked, "Where have you come from?" The Master said, "From Hunan." Yan asked, "What is the surveillance commissioner's surname?" The Master said, "I did not get his surname." Yan asked, "What is his given name?" The Master said, "I did not get his given name." Yan asked, "Does he still handle administrative affairs?" The Master said, "He has his administrative staff." Yan asked, "Does he still go out and come in?" The Master said, "He does not go out or come in." Yan said, "How can he not go out or come in?" The Master flipped his sleeves and left. Early the next morning, Yan entered the hall and summoned the Master. The Master stepped forward. Yan said, "Yesterday's response, the Senior's words did not satisfy this old monk's mind, keeping me uneasy all night. Today I ask the Senior to provide an alternative turning word. If it satisfies this old monk's mind, I will prepare morning gruel and accompany you through the summer retreat." The Master said, "Please ask again, Upādhyāya." Yan said, "What about not going out or coming in?" The Master said, "Too exalted!" Yan then prepared the gruel and they passed the summer retreat together.
