Taking the high seat, [the Master] said, "Is there anyone who does not repay the four debts of gratitude and the three realms of existence?" The assembly had no reply. He also said, "If one does not realize this meaning, how can one transcend the afflictions of beginning and end? Mind after mind must not touch things, step after step must have no place, constantly without interruption—only then does one attain accord. You must apply effort directly; do not pass your days in vain." A monk asked, "When cold and heat arrive, how should one avoid them?" The Master said, "Why not go to the place where there is neither cold nor heat?" The monk said, "What is the place where there is neither cold nor heat?" The Master said, "When it is cold, it freezes the ācārya to death; when it is hot, it scorches the ācārya to death."
