Ascending the hall, he said: "How is it when facing towards? How is it when serving? How is it when making effort? How is it when sharing effort? How is it when effort upon effort?" A monk asked: "What is facing towards?" The Master said: "How is it when eating rice?" He also said: "Having gained strength, one must forget satiety; ceasing provisions, one is no longer hungry." [The monk] said: "What is serving?" The Master said: "How is it when turning one's back?" He also said: "Only knowing the nobility of crimson and purple, you turn your back on the original person." [The monk] said: "What is effort?" The Master said: "How is it when laying down the mattock?" He also said: "Releasing one's hands and sitting upright, leisurely in the secluded place of white clouds." [The monk] said: "What is sharing effort?" The Master said: "Not obtaining form." He also said: "Plain powder can hardly submerge traces; in Chang'an one does not dwell for long." [The monk] said: "What is effort upon effort?" The Master said: "Not shared." He also said: "Blended completely with nowhere to conceal; beyond this, what more is there to seek?" (The verses are recorded below.)
