A monk asked Zhuyu, "What is the practice of a śramaṇa?" Zhuyu said, "The practice is not non-existent, but if there is awareness, it is gone astray." Another monk brought this up to the Master. The Master said, "Why did he not say: I wonder, what practice is it?" The monk then presented these words. Zhuyu said, "The Buddha's practice, the Buddha's practice." The monk returned and brought this up to the Master. The Master said, "Youzhou is still bearable; Silla is the most painful." The monk then asked, "What is the practice of a śramaṇa?" The Master said, "A head three feet long, a neck two inches short." Then the Master ordered an attendant to take these words and ask Upādhyāya Ran of Sansheng. Sansheng gave the attendant's hand a pinch. The attendant returned and brought this up to the Master; the Master approved it.
