A monk asked, "What is the father of the green mountains and white clouds?" The Master said, "That which is not densely luxuriant is it." He said, "What is the son of the white clouds and green mountains?" The Master said, "That which does not distinguish east from west is it." He said, "What is the white clouds leaning on them all day long?" The Master said, "Unable to depart." He said, "What is the green mountains being entirely unaware?" The Master said, "That which does not look back is it." He then spoke a verse: / "Green mountains, the father of white clouds; / White clouds, the son of green mountains. / White clouds leaning on them all day long; / Green mountains entirely unaware."
