The Master cited: "Yaoshan and the late master Yunyan were wandering the mountains, and the knife at [Yaoshan's] waist made a sound. Yunyan asked, 'What thing made a sound?' Yaoshan drew the knife and made a slashing gesture across his mouth." The Master said, "See how Yaoshan gave himself up entirely for this matter. If people nowadays wish to understand the transcendental matter, they must comprehend this meaning before they will attain it."
